The World Cup has its embarrassing, unnecessary third-place playoff. England has its embarrassing, unnecessary Carling Cup. The Boot Room has its proud, essential PREDICTION CUP -- WOODEN SPOON!!! Yep, it's a second chance for the also-rans, those who didn't quite cut the mustard or make the grade. A repechage, if you like. Although I certainly don't.
Right, so I think a good place to start is by nominating the players. Geoff is of course going to be one of them. I've already carved his name in stone, with a permanent marker, in the tournament list. But who dares give the little fella a good hiding this weekend? Maybe Riis, who in his round failed to predict a single correct result (which, by the new scoring system, would have given him a record score of -52)? Or maybe CT, who lost to a Frenchman? Please feel free to nominate somebody else, or yourself. And if you want to play this weekend, just email me your predictions for the following games:
Arsenal v Watford, 15:00
Aston Villa v Tottenham, 15:00
Liverpool v Blackburn, 15:00
Man City v Sheff Utd, 15:00
Middlesbrough v Everton, 15:00
Portsmouth v West Ham, 15:00
Reading v Chelsea, 17:15
Wigan v Man Utd, 12:45
Newcastle v Bolton, 16:00
And don't forget to include a first-goal predictions in case of a draw.
Yes, it sure is an EXCITING COMPETITION!!!

Don't get too cocky Syl. Apparently under the new scoring rules we would have drawn (a 0-0 battle of defensive titans).
I have one question, though:
Doesn't it seem weird that losing this week means that you really won?
There's only one day left to enter PREDICTION CUP -- WOODEN SPOON!!! So far I've only heard from Adam, who is so confident that he didn't even bother with a first-goal prediction. Now that's throwing down the gauntlet. But who will bend down to pick up that gauntlet, then stand up again to be counted?
Meanwhile, regarding questions about winning and losing: I think this discussion is a good indication that the WOODEN SPOON competition is finding its target audience.
By the way, here's a video of the day for those who missed England-Croatia on Wednesday. It's even better if you imagine clown music playing as you watch.
Here are the PREDICTIONs for the WOODEN SPOON!!! competition. Featuring Geoff, Adam, and CT, it'll be anything but pacific (bouya!).
Arsenal v Watford, G: 4-1, A: 3-1, C: 3-0
Aston Villa v Tottenham, G: 1-0, A: 1-1, C: 1-2
Liverpool v Blackburn, G: 2-0, A: 2-1, C: 2-0
Man City v Sheff Utd, G: 1-1, A: 2-0, C: 1-0
Middlesbrough v Everton, G: 0-2, A: 0-1, C: 1-1
Portsmouth v West Ham, G: 1-0, A: 2-0, C: 1-0
Reading v Chelsea, G: 1-2, A: 0-3, C: 1-2
Wigan v Man Utd, G: 0-2, A: 0-3, C: 0-2
Newcastle v Bolton, G: 0-0, A: 0-1, C: 0-1
First goal predictions: G: 7 mins; A: declined; C: 6 mins.
It should be tight. Will Adam come to regret not submitting a first-goal prediction? Will lady luck smile on ickle GG? Will CT's footballing nous see her victorious? Find out here on Monday.
